Unplanned Urbanism: Essays, case studies and project profiles give an overview of the diverse and rich range of programmes and time-patterns that characterise the existing phenomenon of temporary use. Where and why does temporary use occur? Which urban milieus foster its development? What is the relationship between the economic, social and spatial context of these cities and temporary use? Why does temporary use occur in the context of collapsed (e.g. Berlin, East Germany) as well as booming real estate markets (e.g. Helsinki, Vienna, Amsterdam)? What motivates citizens to become temporary users?
Potentials of the informal: Essays by leading researchers, writers and practitioners in the field of architecture, planning, law, sociology and economics. formulate a theoretical base for the approach to temporary use.
Cultivating Temporary Use: Can the potentials of temporary use be integrated in the practice of urban design, urban planning or city management? Which urban players (could) take advantage of temporary use and would therefore consider an alternative approach to planning? Which models of action and urban development tools would be needed? Essays and current European project examples give an overview of innovative practice with a focus on specific tools.
